THE HISTORY OF OUR HOTEL
Relax with us!
THE BEGINNING
THE RESTAURANT OF TIHANY ABBEYThe history of our hotel dates back to 1748, when the owner of the Balatonfüred Spa, the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany, built a guesthouse to welcome guests who wished to recuperate on the mineral waters. This building is the ground floor of the central part of the present-day Blaha Street wing, which at that time housed a large kitchen and a restaurant, the first rooms facing the vineyards. In 1781, cheaper rooms for rent were added in the attic.
THE GREAT HALL
CLASSICIST STYLE HOTELBetween 1787 and 1802, after the dissolution of the Order, the new owner continued the abbey's building works and aimed to modernise the baths. In 1800, a storey was added to the eastern corner of the ground floor building, and the dance hall and billiard room were completed. In 1803, the 32-room neoclassical building, called the Great Hall, was opened.
REFORM ERA
WHEN HISTORICAL FIGURES ARE THE GUESTSAlthough the building burnt down in 1834, the following decades were marked by constant construction and expansion. In the 1840s, the restaurant was so popular that a shuttle service took guests to Balatonfüred three times a week, and in 1842 even Lajos Kossuth had paid a visit to the restaurant. The place felt smaller and smaller and more and more crowded, so by 1848 the Anna Café was built, modelled on the Pilvax Café in Pest. But this year is also written with red letter in the history of the city, because it was the first time that the Anna Ball was held in the ballroom of the Great Hall.
GRAND HOTEL
TURBULENT DECADESIn 1889, the Great Hall reached another milestone, taking the name Anna Grand Hotel. The new name was accompanied by a new style, so in 1913 the hotel was renovated, and the classicist features were reborn in the spirit of Art Nouveau. This was also the opening of the huge veranda restaurant, where we can still enjoy a comfortable dinner today. The 20th century was a turbulent decade for the building, which was a military hospital in 1942 and 1943, nationalised in 1949 and quietly awaited its revival as the Petőfi Spa and then the SZOT sanatorium in 1952. After the change of regime, it was renamed Árkád Hotel, then returned to private ownership in 2004, and reopened in 2009 as Anna Grand Hotel Wine & Vital after reconstruction.
